Show Us Your Life - Homeschool

Today at KellysKorner she is featuring Show Us Your Life - Home school Ideas. I really have been looking forward to this week because I am homeschooling a fourth grader and a ninth/tenth grader.
Our decision to home school stemmed from two main factors: Morals at school and the actual education being received.

We live in an area in which families have a nice living. With that it brings drugs to the schools. There are no gangs, or school uniforms or fights but there are drugs because the children here have access to large amounts of money. In my daughter's middle school there were children making out in the hall way's. One girl in particular was kicked out for skipping school in the middle of the day, getting high, having sex and then coming back. They found a powdery white substance in her backpack, which she claims was crushed children's vitamins. Her father is a single parent working hard to keep them in an almost million dollar home and has a parade of young 20-something girlfriends. It was a sad story all around. Anyway, I didn't want my children exposed to this, especially at such a young age!

Our second reason was the quality of the education being received. Things weren't taught to be learned or memorized, such as the multiplication tables. The kids were taught to pass tests and I'm sorry but that is just not good enough for me! You have kids entering High School that can't multiply and that have no idea what a double negative is. Simply not acceptable!

So we decided to homeschool. The basis for a sound individual starts at home, so why shouldn't educating be done at home too?

Most days my table looks like this.

My oldest, CC homeschools through Global Student Network. We pay a low fee for 365 days of schooling. They supply the online curriculum and keep all the school records. I grade the assignments and send them back to her completed and graded or marked as a redo. She is able to see exactly where she is at any moment and there is online help available. They offer AP classes and electives. And a HUGE bonus is that she is able to work ahead. She just finished ninth grade (where she should be) and has now started tenth grade. Her goal is to be completely finished by next year and get a huge head start on Vet school.

Homeschooling offers us so much flexibility. We are able to do so much more together as a family. One of our favorite things to do is have park days. We pack up and the girls study in the fresh air. It doesn't even seem like homework this way! We always leave feeling refreshed!

Lena, my fourth grader, is enrolled in K12. This is a completely free online public school. She is still a Texas public school student, she just does her work at home. We do drive to testing sites for her TAKS tests. K12 provides all the books, all the project materials such as paint, a canvas, rock, etc. You name it! They also provided her with a brand new computer and printer/scanner as well as head phones, a microphone and other items needed for her classes. We have a daily schedule given to us that needs to be completed by the end of the day. There are some things I do have to grade and then verify that she has done her work. She takes benchmark tests on line and does study island as well. We also get progress reports (report cards) every nine weeks. K12 has worked great for us. It gives structure and discipline and what I love more than anything, it will not allow the student to make below an 80 with out it having to be redone.

Homeschooling is not for everyone. It is hard work and does take effort, but in the end, I know what my children are learning and I know what they are NOT being exposed to. Lena took a placement test on reading. The scores ranged from 300-750. She placed 1500!! Homeschooling works! Lena was doing some pre-Algebra work..and excelling at it!

We also try to do fun things like crafts. I'm not a crafty person and have absolutely NO imagination but we do what we can. I love that I have found some great easy crafts on blogger that have really fun and inspirational for us. Think coffee filter wreaths!

CC also took care of several snails and their babies last year. She had so many it was overwhelming. It was so fun to watch them eat cucumbers and play around.

I love that we can go to the bookstore and read books or listen to music or sit in the cafe and drink coffee and do homework. School work doesn't always have to be done at home.

CC even gets driving lessons...and she is getting really good at it!

We go downtown and have lunch at historic hotels in the city. We first look up information and learn the history of different areas then go and visit them. It is such a fun way to make it personal and retain the facts. Thankfully San Antonio has lots of historic areas for us to visit!

But I think the best part for me is the flexibility. We can go out of town if we want without having to worry about the girls missing school. We just take the laptop along and let them do their work while we are driving. We can stay out late drinking coffee or seeing movies.

The first thing people always asks me is about socialization. My girls still stay in contact with girls they went to school with. They talk on the phone, text and my oldest goes to the bookstore and has coffee with her friend in our neighborhood. We are fortunate that we live close to their friends, so them visiting is never an issue. I have another friend who I just found out is homeschooling too. She is also married to a Russian and she said when someone asks her about her girls socializing she tells them, "I'm married to a Russian. There are parties every weekend and there is no shortage of socializing for my girls!" It's true. Occasionally we will meet during the afternoon and let the younger kids play at McDonald's or go to the bookstore. I also joined a homeschool group on MeetUp.com. These girls are not with out friends!

Again, homeschooling is not for everyone. I think it may be more work than having a student enrolled in a public or private school. As the parent and learning coach you know that the education your children receive is wholly based upon how much you put into their learning. It can be tiresome and we don't always have perfect days. Some days we are racing the clock to get work turned it. But I love it and I wouldn't have it any other way!

Show Us Your Life - Kitchens

Today at Kelly's Korner she is hosting Show Us Your Life - Kitchens!
Now my kitchen is NOT big nor is it fancy with all the extras, but it is where I spend ALOT of my time, especially now since I am no longer working! We are planning on doing a major kitchen remodel sometime in the beginning of next year, but for now, this is my kitchen!

Our breakfast area. The plates on the wall are Bradford Exchange Russian fairytale plates. I HATE that chandelier. It came with the house and is one of the first things I cannot wait to change!
The actual kitchen....so small! It's hard for more than two people to be in there. Our previous house had a kitchen the size of my living room here. But..it's ok. We make it work!
Russian trays on the entry to the breakfast area. They are all handpainted and almost all my Russian items were purchased on eBay.

My plates! Each one tells a different fairy tale. There are more to the collection but I have no where to put anymore so I finally stopped buying them!

The Snowmaiden, middle plate left side, is my absolute favorite!

My mother-in-law gave me these roosters. I love roosters in the kitchen.
My aprons....
Russian khokhloma apron holder.
My husband brought this huge candle home one day. It smells so good!! And it burns forever! The little bowl hold Russian candies. (In case you're wondering, my husband is Russian. But, I've had a fascination with Russia loooooong before I met him!)Russian cutting boards... I've actually had to use them a time or two!
My husbands friends wife who is also Russian was bidding on this cutting board set when I was. I won, obviously. You should have seen her face when she came over and saw it hanging on my wall!

One of my first Russian cutting board purchases!

This is my favorite cutting board set by far!!
These khokhloma trays were given to me by our friend Svetlana when she came to visit us from Russia.

She also gave me this clock.

This trio of trays hang above my pantry door.

I love, love, love my Keurig! I cannot say enough kind words about it! I LOVE it!!! My sister gave me the tealight candle teapot for Christmas one year. I love it!

It drives me nuts when the knife block isn't complete! I'm keeping it real here. This is what is on my bread box....a K-pod set of green tea, recipe box, cookbook and cookies. I bought the bread box at a garage sale for $5! I love it!!!
Since my kitchen is so small things like my blender and crockpot have to live on the cabinets. More cabinet space is something we will definitely be implementing!

The top of my refrigerator is a mess! This is one thing I have on my to-do list since I'm no longer working. I have done my closet, Lena's room AND closet and the laundry room....it's coming along, slowly but surely!
These are my decorations above my cabinets. Mostly teapots (which I love! I'm sure it has something to do with Alice in Wonderland!) and Russian tea cozies and khokhloma items.
My Russian tea cozies...love them!

These are my many cookbooks in the cabinet above my stove. It's an addiction. I can't stop buying them!!
A handwritten recipe for homemade pie crust given to me by my mother that was given to her from her father in law! It is superb! CC always asks me to make her just the crust and let her eat it!
The picture in the corner Lena drew. It's supposed to be me but it has blue eyes!
These blue figurines are called gzhel. They are also Russian and very collectible. I have only a few but you can find entire tea sets made of gzhel.

I hope you enjoyed my kitchen tour. It's not much but it's where you can find any one of us at any given time! I can't wait to stop by and visit the other kitchens! Kitchens make or break the house for me...that's why I can't wait to redo ours!!

Show Us Your Life - Master Bedroom

Today is Friday...and at Kelly's Korner that means it's Show Us Your Life - Master Bedrooms.
I almost didn't participate because my bedroom is so bland. My husband likes things bare and minimal so I HAVE to live that way too. Curtains are even out of the question..well, you'll see.. I'm about to stand my ground on that one.
So on with the tour.
This is what you see when you first enter my room...my dresser.

This is my favorite picture of my Papa Bear. We were at a wedding and he was super drunk. He didn't even remember this picture until it was email to him. I put it in black and white and enlarged it. I LOVE it! The wooden frame beside it holds books of pictures. It was given to me for Christmas last year.
Lena gave me this vase for my birthday this year. Usually I will have fresh roses from my garden in it but all this rain damaged the petals so for now it holds flowers my Lena made for me.
Mr. Toby had to sneak in while I was taking pictures...so here he is. We adopted him in May. He was originally supposed to be a Mothers Day gift for my mother but we fell so in love with him we couldn't let him go. So that Mothers Day Mom got a new cell phone and we got a new cat!
This is on the right side of my dresser...a Russian porcelain doll, a picture Lena made when she attended public school (before we started homeschooling) and then a school picture of Lena and a black and white of me and CC. AND... a card from my husband. Those come few and VERY far between so I like to look at it often!

These are my Russian lacquer boxes. I tried to get a clear photo but it just wasn't happening. They are all hand painted and do in fact hold some of my earrings and rings.
As soon as you enter my bedroom to your left is my nightstand. The double monkey is from my Papa Bear. It plays "Just the Two of Us..." and the Build-A-Bear is from Mom, CC and Lena for my birthday. It smells sooo good...the rubbed vanilla on it. Of course you also see my bible and phone charger!
Look who's making another appearance! My sheets are a semi-shiny silvery grey. I have no comforter yet. I like to feel a little chill...soon I will need to pull it out. I would prefer more pillows but Papa Bear doesn't like alot of pillows...so I'm stuck with one...and now a very fluffy one at that! The lavender pillow I won in an Eddie Ross giveaway on Blogger. It is sooo beautiful!
It's made from a vintage gown and has hand beading...It's only on the bed when the bed is fixed.
Now Papa Bear's side of the room. This is his chest of drawers. The flowers are there because I have no where else to put them and my Eddie Ross pillow is usually behind them so it works well.
Papa Bears night stand. See all his scratches and dings?
These are his ear phones and the big ones are actually wireless headphones. We used to have a TV in our room but I made him take it out. When I worked he would keep me up all night watching TV and laughing. We thought if he used the wireless headphones it would be ok. We were wrong! And those are his books, Russian mysteries and an old National Geographic.
This is the only window in out bedroom. It has white wooden blinds because that is what he chose. I want curtains...he says no. Soooo.... I've been looking and can't find the curtain that I want. So, Mom and I are going to make them. They will be very simple. I found the fabric. It's just a bit lighter than my bedsheets and it's sheer. I want black velvet ties at the top. I think it will look really good and blend easily into the room.
If you noticed the shot of my husbands chest of drawers you probably saw this hiding....
I love tulips and he was painting me a tulip picture but never finished. It's about 5 years in the works now...and it lives on the side of the chest!
Behind the chest is this picture. I bought it earlier this year at an art sale. I was going to go back the next day and fit a frame but they were gone...so for now it lives behind the chest. I have no idea where I will hang it once I get it framed, but I'm sure I'll find a place.

Here I am standing between my dresser and his chest taking the picture. I don't have the decorations centered...but it's ok. I'm just keeping it real. When I hang my curtains I will fix this.
The view standing by the bathroom door, dresser to my left, bedroom door to my right.
And that is it folks....nothing spectacular. But it's comfortable and relaxing. I love the color on the walls, it's called Wild Hawk. Papa Bear and I painted the room ourselves. I remember I had pneumonia but I wanted so badly to help out. There are spots where the paint is too light or smudged on the base boards or you can see the print of the roller. But I think those things make the room "ours." And I like that.
I intended to put my giveaway up but I am just too tired. I will have to do that as soon as I get up tomorrow!
